On a previous trip here, we ventured to Mama's Fish House for lunch, as recommended by several people. There is no doubt, it is an excellent dining experience that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. However, this time around, we discovered Milagros right on the corner of Hwy 36 and Baldwin Ave. Here, they serve up excellent Mexican meals with a Hawaiian twist: mahi-mahi fish tacos and the mahi-mahi sandwich have now become my favourites. Ask for a couple of Bikini Blonde Beers made by the local micro-brewery, Maui Brewing Company, and a basket of fresh taco chips with their amazing salsa and chunky guacamole, and you have a complete meal.
From our first visit to Milagros this trip. Can you see the chunks of avacado in the guacamole? Just the way I like it!
We just about forgot to take the picture before diving in to the fish tacos, served with beans and mexican rice and a big dollop of guacamole.
During our second week, we came back to Milagros. Bill wasted no time in deciding what to order (fish tacos, of course), but I decided on the mahi-mahi sandwich (I try not to eat an excess of breads, but couldn't resist it here). I had my fish blackened and it was served with a tropical fruit salsa (papaya, pineapple, dragonfruit, onion, cilantro, lime and perhaps a little more citrus). On the side is a serving of chipotle aiole to spread on your bun and dip your fries. De-lish!
What topped off our trip(s) to Milagros is the excellent service we received. On our second visit, we had the same server, Sarah, who is also the manager. She took excellent care of us, which is part of the reason why we returned the second time.
There is a nice little Gelato shop across the street from Milagros that carried some unique Hawaiian flavours.
On our way out of town the first time, we had to stop and take pictures of the sugar cane trucks hauling harvested cane to the plant. These monsters come out of the fields with very little time to stop before crossing roads all over the area.
Pa'ia Tip
If you are going for a day trip to Pa'ia, parking is a bit of a crap-shoot at best. We just by-pass the stress of finding a parking spot and go south on Baldwin Ave. about two blocks. Here, you will find a gravel parking lot on the right hand side of the road which is more than sufficient for your needs. Remember to lock all valuables in the trunk (before getting there).
