Banyan Tree Park is along the south end of Front Street, near the harbour. Under the cool shade of this giant banyan tree, you can take a rest. The tree reaches out over nearly the entire park. It reminds me of an aging grandparent who doesn't mind the grandchildren crawling all over him or her because it brings so much joy. There are always children climbing on this tree. It never seems to moan or groan, just enjoys being a part of the moment. I would love to know what that old tree has lived through and seen in its years.
There is a short, self-guided walking tour that goes around the park to provide tourists with a little historical information, as well as a longer walk to take your further around town. This is a good way to explore town and learn some of it's history; although, there aren't any maps to take with you, so it's sometimes difficult to find the next point of interest along the way.
Shave ice is to gelato as snow cones are to ice cream. It is just a cut above the regular! We have never come across shave ice until this trip, and we have quickly learned that there is shave ice, and then there is shave ice! Unlike a snow cone that allows the flavour to sink to the bottom of your paper cone, because of the technique in making the perfect shave ice, the flavour is evenly distributed throughout the tasty treat. It starts with a block of ice about the size of a margarine container. It is placed on the blade that finely shaves the ice for the server to collect and pack into the plastic bowl. The best trained servers will pack it in tight and form a dome on top, trimming any edges that might drip. Using a wooden skewer, the server pokes several holes around the dome to ensure the even distribution of the flavoured syrup as it is generously drizzled over the ice. There are several tasty tropical flavours, including pineapple, mango, and tiger's blood (cherry and coconut). Definitely worth a try when visiting Maui! Here's Bill with his first shave ice (made the right way).
An early supper before going to the Maui Theatre to see 'Ulalena.
A view of the Lahaina harbour from our table at Koa's.
'Ulalena is a must see for anyone coming to Maui. It is a wonderful show that depicts the story of how Hawaii evolved over the centuries. We felt it was a fantastic performance, set off with some humourous and even emotional moments. It ignites an appreciation for Maui's deeply embedded culture and is appropriate for all ages.
Performer from the show. The girl in the blue was one of the soloists and did an amazing job.
